Matt Campo
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Instructor
Matthew Campo started training in Jiu-Jitsu in seventh grade and wrestled throughout high school at St. Augustine Preparatory School in a small town outside Atlantic City, New Jersey. After high school, he continued his Jiu-Jitsu journey with the JMU Jiu-Jitsu Club for four years, followed by two years at Scranton MMA and four years at Colorado Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Stapleton, where he earned his blue belt.
After moving to Charlottesville in 2019 to work at UVA Health, Matthew joined Gracie Charlottesville shortly after the academy opened. He quickly fell in love with the culture and was impressed by the level of expertise throughout the school. He especially valued the camaraderie and the way everyone pushed one another to succeed. With the support of his teammates, Matthew was awarded his black belt in March 2026.
Matthew is a Director of Business Operations at UVA Health in Transplant Services. He holds a bachelor's degree in Health Services Administration from James Madison University and a master's degree in Health Administration from the University of Scranton.
For Matthew, Jiu-Jitsu is more than a workout. He loves that technique and strategy can overcome strength and athleticism, giving the underdog a chance to succeed. No matter the position, there is always a way to improve and find a path to victory. Jiu-Jitsu puts you in the moment, teaches composure and problem-solving, and reinforces the importance of hard work, consistency, and grit. To Matthew, those lessons extend far beyond the mats and apply to all aspects of life.
Matthew lives in Charlottesville with his wife, Jenna, and their 3 year old daughter, Gracie, who, as her name suggests, better like Jiu-Jitsu!
