Black Belt Instructor

Dr. John McCune

John is a BJJ Revolution Team Black Belt in the Julio Cesar “Foca” Fernandez Nunes lineage. He started training jiu jitsu in 2007 under Lamonte Tyler at the local Charlottesville YMCA. Lamonte’s teaching style resonated with John, and he was addicted after the first class. He then trained under Gordon Emery at Charlottesville Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu where he learned a highly detailed and technical style of BJJ. John earned all of his belts under Gordon at Cville BJJ.

The Covid-19 pandemic threw the local BJJ scene into chaos, and John found himself at Gracie Charlottesville in the summer of 2020. Having trained with the founding black belts over the years, he felt very at home and welcome on their mats. John has a secret love for catch wrestling, likely due in part to his mother’s family hailing from Wigan, Lancashire, UK home of the famous gym ”The Snake Pit” of Billy Riley.  He has incorporated many of the techniques of catch into his BJJ game.

John, a life-long Virginian, was raised in Luray, VA, attended James Madison University and moved to Charlottesville in the mid-1990’s for graduate school, where he earned a Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Virginia. After fleeing academia and then the corporate world, he founded Bishop Analytics where he now works as an options trader. John is married to a wonderfully supportive woman who tolerates his bizarre love for grappling, has three children who also train BJJ, and a dog. John enjoys teaching and brings a fun animated style to the mats. He’s taught all age levels and believes strongly that BJJ can lift everyone up.
